Iron Maiden Flight 666

en
00:00:45 We shall go on to the end.
00:00:47 we shall fight in France.
00:00:50 we shall fight on the seas and oceans.
00:00:52 we shall fight with growing confidence
00:00:57 we shall defend our island.
00:01:01 we shall fight on the beaches.
00:01:04 we shall fight on the landing grounds.
00:01:06 we shall fight in the fields
00:01:10 we shall fight in the hills.
00:03:35 It's January 28th 2008
00:03:39 I'm here because my favourite band.
00:03:43 to film the first leg of their
00:03:47 This tour is based on the classic
00:03:51 which is back when I first became a fan.
00:03:55 That's a thing of beauty.
00:03:57 Over the next six weeks.
00:04:00 on lron Maiden's
00:04:05 and watch them play 21 cities
00:04:09 That's an average distance
00:04:13 And what's even more impressive
00:04:15 is that lead singer Bruce Dickinson
00:04:18 The aeroplane idea started off
00:04:22 I went. "Wow. if you could get
00:04:28 "you could cut down hugely on the amount
00:04:32 So I said. "What if you join up
00:04:34 "all the countries that accountants say.
00:04:39 And we just join them up. And we go...
00:04:42 Yes. we can.
00:04:45 The idea of especially modifying a plane
00:04:47 to take the band. 70 crew.
00:04:51 has never been attempted before.
00:04:53 This could be the most ambitious tour
00:04:57 and everyone seems a little nervous
00:05:00 When you're going round the world
00:05:04 passenger and freight on the same plane.
00:05:06 on that level it's very hard.
00:05:08 We knew what we had to do.
00:05:12 to make sure the plane
00:05:14 of flying with that much freight in the back.
00:05:16 To get all of that together took a year.
00:05:18 Everything else was in place.
00:05:22 The only thing we hadn't got
00:05:25 I was the nut in the nutcracker. as it were.
00:05:29 Because when it came to that morning.
00:05:31 and we still hadn't signed the papers
00:05:36 I was in a stressful place.
00:05:40 Tire was a little bit flat this morning.
00:05:43 but just as a precaution
00:05:48 It's not like Formula One.
00:05:51 Is that the young man
00:05:53 Yeah.
00:05:54 Take your hands out of your pocket.
00:05:56 How come we shouldn't have
00:05:58 'Cause it shows a slovenly attitude.
00:06:01 the type of attitude that is easily
00:06:07 Ian. what did you tell me to do
00:06:09 with the documentary people
00:06:13 He said I've got to be nice to you.
00:06:15 Iron Maiden's always been a band that's
00:06:20 They've never had a camera crew
00:06:25 And we don't really know what to expect.
00:06:31 Turn that off.
00:06:34 Good morning. Welcome to Stansted.
00:06:38 Who's he? Who are you?
00:06:43 As we drove into the airport
00:06:45 there was you guys with the cameras
00:06:49 and Rob was telling us to be nice to you.
00:06:51 "Get that camera out of my face!"
00:06:53 Right. come here!
00:06:56 I didn't sleep a lot the night before.
00:06:59 It's like going on holiday
00:07:02 and getting anxious and don't want
00:07:06 Oh. yes. here we go! Ed Force One!
00:07:09 You all right?
00:07:10 You frickin' beauty!
00:07:11 And you've got a whole case on there.
00:07:14 I must admit I was a bit sceptical about it all.
00:07:17 The idea of band and crew
00:07:20 It's like a trip away in a coach.
00:07:24 Iike a day trip.
00:07:28 The only time we'd ever travelled with
00:07:32 where. basically.
00:07:35 There was the band and one guy.
00:07:37 I think it's something to look forward to.
00:07:39 All crews are maniacs. and ours have
00:07:43 No interviews. Tax purposes.
00:07:45 You're not allowed in this section.
00:07:49 They got the rubber stamp of approval.
00:07:52 Yeah. we're all strapped down
00:07:54 and palleted and fire-bagged
00:07:59 - And we're good to go.
00:08:02 Everything was just going swimmingly
00:08:05 and I was sat on the flight deck going.
00:08:06 "There are so many things
00:08:09 "Just take a deep breath
00:08:14 And then we can go.
00:08:17 A bit windy when we get to Baku.
00:08:19 And then a stonking power wind'll take us
00:08:24 Plenty of time to drink
00:08:27 See you later. and we'll get ourselves
00:08:31 ..and you know you are!
00:08:33 You're shit and you know you are!
00:08:37 Five star 666 to Sierra 1.
00:08:40 Wind 290. Ten knots.
00:08:42 Clear for takeoff. Flight 666.
00:08:56 I've done plenty of take-offs in Boeing 757s.
00:08:59 but this particular one was rather special.
00:09:02 I was so glad to get the wheels up
00:09:05 London five star 666 passing 2.800 feet.
00:09:09 Everybody was chuffed to bits
00:09:12 The seats were all comfy and
00:09:16 and then the cabin crew
00:09:19 Everybody was like. "Yeah. great!
00:09:40 Since getting here on Thursday.
00:09:42 the band's been mobbed by young rock
00:09:47 Although lron Maiden struggle to get
00:09:50 they still fill stadiums around the world.
00:09:53 This new plane means
00:09:56 than any other group can.
00:09:58 Despite being around for decades.
00:09:59 Iron Maiden are spearheading
00:10:04 Teenagers fed up
00:10:07 are buying into heavy metal in a big way.
00:10:10 Sky News. Mumbai.
00:10:12 Are you happy?
00:10:15 It's not even funny. man!
00:10:27 Shit. Shit. man.
00:10:30 Maiden!
00:10:34 This tour for us
00:10:36 is a retrospective look
00:10:41 We're playing songs
00:10:44 But. most importantly. for an audience
00:10:46 which has never seen us
00:10:51 this is a real treat.
00:10:52 It's every guy's dream to be a rock star
00:10:57 So can you give us a little insight
00:11:02 the kind of stuff
00:11:05 If we told you.
00:11:10 Yeah. we could tell you
00:11:22 So how did you first discover lron Maiden?
00:11:25 At my friend's uncle's place.
00:11:27 I saw this Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
00:11:31 And I just freaked out on the artwork.
00:11:34 It was love at first listen. I just got hooked
00:11:40 And I haven't looked behind ever since.
00:11:43 Maiden!
00:11:46 The first time we played in lndia
00:11:49 and we were absolutely
00:11:52 It's a 20.000-seat outdoor venue. and
00:11:56 It was reminiscent of 1 984.
00:11:59 when we played behind the lron Curtain
00:12:01 and we were besieged.
00:12:03 This is the first major metal band
00:12:06 The crowd are waiting here
00:12:09 More and more kids
00:12:13 They start getting into playing guitar.
00:12:16 and something will come out of it
00:12:19 Bruce. you rock!
00:12:20 Best band in the world.
00:13:11 - Nice one. mate.
00:13:13 That worked nice. didn't it?
00:13:14 - It went really nice.
00:13:18 I'll keep it. though.
00:13:21 I'll turn it up if you like.
00:13:22 The first show was lndia.
00:13:26 To be totally honest with you. I was
00:13:30 than I was getting inside a 757
00:13:33 and all our gear in the back.
00:13:35 We got to the venue
00:13:38 The stage was lashed-together bamboo.
00:13:41 We were going round testing it
00:13:44 The backstage thing where everything's
00:13:50 it's almost like
00:13:54 Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!
00:16:20 All right?
00:16:22 Can we switch the air conditioning off.
00:16:25 Let's go.
00:16:27 I'll tell you what amazed me.
00:16:31 I know. I know. Which is unusual.
00:16:34 Beer!
00:16:36 Obviously got very good taste in music.
00:16:40 Five beers is not enough
00:16:44 I said to the tour manager. "Five beers for
00:16:49 "It's pathetic."
00:16:50 - I'm sure we can afford it.
00:16:52 I can't talk very well
00:16:56 So bear with me.
00:16:58 Look. boys and girls.
00:17:01 We post-mortem the gig for ten seconds.
00:17:06 Then we argue.
00:17:07 And then we argue about ice cream vans
00:17:10 It was a little jagged tonight. Got through it.
00:17:12 I thought I might collapse halfway through.
00:17:18 Oh. dear. We've still got the police escort.
00:17:21 He's the only vehicle holding us up.
00:17:24 Oh. man.
00:17:35 Passengers travelling
00:17:40 kindly board the aircraft
00:17:43 That's what I'm saying. I don't...
00:17:48 ..will be served in-flight.
00:17:51 and no smoking signs...
00:17:56 You're shit and you know you are!
00:17:59 You're shit and you know you are!
00:18:03 You're shit and you know you are!
00:18:06 You're shit and you know you are!
00:18:20 I've got to slow down
00:18:32 It's like watching a rare wild animal.
00:18:35 Even in its sleep. it snarls and it growls.
00:18:38 unaware of the presence of the cameras.
00:18:42 Rod is the best rock and roll manager
00:18:44 who is not just about the money
00:18:48 It's about integrity and. "We did it our way."
00:18:51 He's such a bombastic guy.
00:18:54 Sometimes he's bombastic
00:18:58 We all moan about him
00:19:00 and he's a very hard-edged person.
00:19:03 He's a Yorkshireman.
00:19:09 Bloody Roderick Smallwood!
00:19:12 He's brilliant when he bursts into the room.
00:19:15 I thought that was him.
00:19:18 And it's awake. We've woken it up.
00:19:23 Fat chance of sleeping.
00:20:12 Saxon's radar. good afternoon...
00:20:20 Could you sign this?
00:20:24 - Maiden! Maiden!
00:20:30 So where are we?
00:20:31 We're at the Corner Hotel in Australia
00:20:35 So why do you have
00:20:38 Just to get together. have fun. have
00:20:42 'Cause we're all pumped for Maiden.
00:20:44 This is David from Melbourne.
00:20:47 It's not so much about identity or whatever
00:20:53 If you could see all these different types
00:20:57 and worship upon the altar
00:20:59 they have this ability to really hit your heart
00:21:03 and either that or it makes you want
00:21:08 How long have you been Maiden fans?
00:21:10 Since I was fucking born. man!
00:21:13 Fucking day 666!
00:21:17 It's been 1 5 years
00:21:19 Everywhere we go.
00:21:23 Some people never saw us.
00:21:26 But absolutely incredible everywhere.
00:21:29 We're bigger than ever.
00:21:31 Our heyday was the mid-'80s.
00:21:34 We're 24. 25 years older.
00:21:36 but we get up on stage and I look out
00:21:41 It's really weird.
00:21:43 I go. "Look. They're the same kids that were
00:21:47 Why is it that Maiden appeals
00:21:52 Because they're cool.
00:21:53 Because they're fucking awesome. man!
00:21:56 I believe lron Maiden are playing here
00:22:00 Steve's probably flat out in bed.
00:22:02 He's also down still?
00:22:04 Steve's down big-time.
00:22:08 We all picked up a little bug from lndia.
00:22:13 I mean. we didn't eat for four days.
00:22:15 By the time we'd arrived in Australia
00:22:19 we'd start a song. someone would be off
00:22:23 and people were just off everywhere.
00:22:26 We're all pretty jet-lagged still.
00:22:29 You've got to be ready for that concert
00:22:34 We've had buckets for both ends on stage
00:22:38 T en out of ten to the band for putting up
00:22:41 and going out on stage
00:22:49 There's always a shithouse
00:22:56 Scream for me. Melbourne!
00:23:01 I can't fucking hear you!
00:25:05 The ship is fucking sinking.
00:25:09 Yeah. it's a bit better.
00:25:13 None of the places you play
00:25:16 so you always have sound problems.
00:25:19 You have to just be prepared for the worst.
00:25:21 and if it sounds great. all the better.
00:25:27 People who've paid to see you don't
00:25:32 They want to have a good time. and that's
00:25:35 Adrian has always been a stickler
00:25:40 He's meticulous.
00:25:43 When you listen to his guitar solos.
00:25:46 Adrian's guitar playing is the stitching.
00:25:49 it's the texture. the fabric
00:25:52 Nothing Adrian does is aggressive. Iike...
00:25:57 Everything lopes.
00:26:00 And how he does it. no one knows.
00:26:06 I'm trying to be all serious.
00:26:10 Sorry.
00:26:13 I felt like shit before I went on. and then l
00:26:18 Contrary to belief. boys and girls.
00:26:20 Harris don't smack the shit
00:26:24 And I have it on good authority
00:26:29 You are talking a load of bollocks.
00:26:31 More shit comes out of your mouth
00:26:33 More shit?
00:26:35 Actually...
00:26:39 Are you coming for a drink. Steve?
00:26:40 Got some nice chilli.
00:26:42 Just about full.
00:26:44 You're fired. You can go home.
00:26:47 I thought you were gonna come with me
00:26:51 I have my limits.
00:26:53 You ought to do. mate.
00:26:55 Go on. bugger off. you.
00:26:56 See you later.
00:26:58 - Can't beat them.
00:27:05 I don't like being part of the group
00:27:08 You need to be out. be an individual.
00:27:11 So when you've got the show the next day.
00:27:16 There he is.
00:27:18 Oh. my God.
00:27:20 How are you. mate?
00:27:24 I reckon I've known the guys for 25 years.
00:27:27 Their first tour here in Australia. Number
00:27:34 We've been friends ever since. really.
00:27:38 This is not easy.
00:27:40 Again.
00:27:44 Adrian a worthy opponent there. Pat?
00:27:46 A much better tennis player
00:27:49 We got a chance to play Pat Cash.
00:27:51 we had also Wayne Arthurs.
00:27:55 I had the audacity
00:28:02 I was put firmly in my place.
00:28:04 That's in the movie.
00:28:12 Now. didn't you?
00:28:15 I'm gonna get your camera.
00:28:19 When you're on the road
00:28:21 you don't want to sit in your hotel room
00:28:25 Everyone has their own activities
00:28:29 Get out of the bloody way!
00:28:33 A lot of bands go out there and put on
00:28:37 You can't go out and go crazy every night.
00:28:40 because the performance
00:28:43 Instead of spending six hours in the bar.
00:28:45 you can spend six hours on the golf course.
00:28:48 And then maybe an hour in the bar.
00:28:51 Not bad. Dave.
00:28:53 That kind of hurt.
00:28:55 Davey is the backbone of the band.
00:28:58 You can have a chat about things
00:29:00 and then he comes out
00:29:03 Dave is the wise counsel.
00:29:05 He doesn't say much.
00:29:07 Not bothered. Major crises?
00:29:09 Somebody will ask Dave what he thinks.
00:29:11 "l think this." And it's like "Whoo!"
00:29:14 We should have got that out of him
00:29:18 - It's good night from him.
00:29:20 - And it's...
00:29:22 Toodle-oo. Bye-bye. boys and girls.
00:29:25 All aboard the Skylark.
00:29:32 How many you got to sign there?
00:29:34 This is the second boxload
00:29:36 and there's another four boxloads
00:29:40 A lot of musicians that tour the world
00:29:43 but you have them with you.
00:29:45 I was the first one
00:29:47 and I think that's been
00:29:50 being away from your family.
00:29:52 They enjoy being on the road
00:29:54 and they still say. "Dad. when can
00:29:58 We used to have our own bus.
00:29:59 We were separate from all the mayhem
00:30:02 I used to like sleeping in the tour bus.
00:30:06 How would you describe your dad
00:30:08 Quiet.
00:30:10 Shy.
00:30:11 He keeps himself to himself.
00:30:14 I think he's kept us really grounded.
00:30:17 'Cause we could have been a nightmare.
00:30:19 So is this the last tour you're gonna do?
00:30:22 Yes.
00:30:23 Are you sure?
00:30:24 Positive.
00:30:25 What do you plan to do with your time off?
00:30:27 Grow vegetables.
00:30:29 I'll miss two things. Abusing people.
00:30:34 In the event we land in the water.
00:30:36 remove the jacket from the container.
00:30:39 fold the tapes around your waist.
00:30:41 and tie them securely in a double knot
00:30:44 I thought it were a single knot.
00:30:46 No. it's a double.
00:31:01 Scream for me. Sydney!
00:31:08 Let me see those hands out there!
00:31:10 Sydney!
00:31:11 Oh. yeah!
00:31:14 Take a look at yourselves.
00:31:57 How you doing? All right. Sydney?
00:33:43 The flying thing was in my bones
00:33:46 Two members of my family
00:33:48 so I was brought up with aeroplanes.
00:33:50 It shocked me. the experience of getting
00:33:55 You can never be the master of it.
00:33:57 You can control it to an extent. but
00:34:02 It's a very humbling experience.
00:34:04 Bruce is just full-on.
00:34:08 I wish I had a serum. get some out of him.
00:34:11 He's able to juggle lots of things at once.
00:34:13 He has a perpetual flood of ideas.
00:34:16 His enthusiasm rubs off.
00:34:18 If he gets excited about something
00:34:22 Like now. he's flying planes on days off.
00:34:25 We'd be doing a European tour
00:34:28 then he'd be flying to North Africa.
00:34:30 You think. "Christ. at his age. he should
00:34:34 Passed our second Equal Time Point.
00:34:37 So now we are absolutely
00:34:43 This is in fact my first time
00:34:47 I'd say it's a very wonderful experience
00:35:03 Take me back to the first time
00:35:06 I was excited to come to Japan
00:35:07 because it's somewhere
00:35:10 I was intrigued with all the shogun stuff.
00:35:13 Notice.
00:35:19 Back then you'd turn up in a hotel. they'd
00:35:24 Iittle stuffed toys. Iittle cards.
00:35:26 and they'd make you feel really welcome.
00:35:28 It was the only place in the world
00:35:30 where we physically got mobbed
00:35:34 Hello. My name is Maria.
00:35:37 Japanese Maiden girl number one!
00:35:40 Welcome to Japan. Iron Maiden. OK?
00:35:43 I would like to become
00:35:50 We'll have to work on that.
00:35:51 Stay heavy.
00:36:02 Iron Maiden's having a massive resurgence.
00:36:37 So focused.
00:36:38 I've never seen anything like it.
00:36:39 I just blocked it out.
00:36:43 Get rid of that one.
00:36:46 Twenty-six people
00:36:49 Ninety-four people to lay a carpet.
00:36:53 Bring the gear on the stage.
00:36:56 Being with lron Maiden. you work
00:36:59 You are on 24/7.
00:37:01 On a good day I start at 7
00:37:05 The crew are the biggest partiers I know.
00:37:09 When you're in the lron Maiden family.
00:37:13 You've got to screw up to get kicked out.
00:37:15 Is there any chance we could get a drink
00:37:18 - No. You'll wait!
00:37:22 He's a slave-driver.
00:37:23 We need two Laurens
00:37:26 Wine and food. please.
00:37:40 I'll send the old man back here
00:37:43 The Old Man And The Sea.
00:37:44 His last term.
00:37:47 It is. It's his last go.
00:37:50 He'll be back. This is the fourth time.
00:37:52 At least twice.
00:37:53 Dick Bell and I go back
00:37:57 He's a phenomenal production manager
00:38:01 He used to come round and hit you
00:38:04 He's a bit of a bastard.
00:38:07 And now he's retiring again
00:38:10 Let's go.
00:38:12 Not even dressed yet.
00:38:20 OK. Dickie. we're looking at ten minutes.
00:38:24 OK. always good.
00:38:29 We're on.
00:40:57 I know!
00:40:59 That was brilliant. That is so good.
00:41:02 Less of the "young".
00:41:08 See you somewhere in Spain.
00:41:09 Everything's done.
00:41:13 It is a big bastard. isn't it?
00:41:19 Carry on.
00:41:21 If you are carrying a mobile telephone
00:41:26 these should be switched off. as these
00:41:29 air pressure...
00:41:32 You're shit and you know you are!
00:41:35 You're shit and you know you are!
00:41:58 By the time this tour is over.
00:42:02 travelled over 50.000 miles in 45 days.
00:42:05 something considered nearly impossible
00:42:09 until this band figured out a way to pull it off
00:42:13 Laura lngle. Fox News.
00:42:33 - We made it to sunny LA.
00:42:40 We flew from Japan
00:42:42 up through Anchorage to LA.
00:42:44 When we got to LA.
00:42:47 To Steve the music comes first.
00:42:48 Off the plane.
00:42:57 You might want to leave it up a bit.
00:43:00 Just on that bit.
00:43:03 I don't think Maiden ever cares
00:43:06 and that's one of the things
00:43:08 We like eight-minute songs.
00:43:11 Slow intros and outros.
00:43:14 So we've got ten songs like that.
00:43:18 Steve is obviously the anchor of the band.
00:43:22 If he doesn't write the songs.
00:43:26 You know. it's Steve's band.
00:43:27 We have this sixth sense
00:43:29 He doesn't have to say something.
00:43:33 There are a handful of bass players that
00:43:37 And I'm playing with one
00:43:41 Steve is the musical basis of Maiden
00:43:44 and it's something I can say.
00:43:47 that everything gets Steve-ized.
00:43:49 The spirit of Maiden comes from
00:43:54 and he's completely incorruptible.
00:44:09 Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!
00:44:15 This way.
00:44:17 My pass sucks.
00:44:19 Your pass is golden.
00:44:21 How did that happen?
00:44:23 He's a big fan.
00:44:24 - All right.
00:44:27 I wore out Piece Of Mind.
00:44:31 At night-time I put the headphones on
00:44:36 Did Smith and Murray
00:44:38 I was always a fan of the twin axe attack
00:44:41 but. myself. I never wanted to share.
00:44:46 When Steve Harris's foot goes up
00:44:51 I'm gonna be very excited tonight.
00:44:54 I remember one thing
00:44:57 was on the Number Of The Beast Tour
00:45:01 we always looked to lron Maiden
00:45:03 They always had the cooler records.
00:45:08 the cooler stage shows.
00:45:10 They just were cooler than everybody else.
00:45:12 Is Nicko an influence on you?
00:45:14 Yeah. absolutely.
00:45:16 One day he's gonna realize
00:45:21 you could actually see what he was doing.
00:45:23 It was like "Nicko. man. come on.
00:45:31 I have an audience here.
00:45:34 Hiya.
00:45:36 I'm trying to learn something.
00:45:40 Let him who hath understanding
00:45:44 for it is a human number.
00:45:47 Its number is six hundred and sixty six.
00:49:12 Twenty to eight. so just under six hours.
00:49:16 Still don't quite understand
00:49:19 but it fits. just about.
00:49:31 Going all the way round the time zones.
00:49:33 halfway round the world. up to Japan.
00:49:35 from summer to winter.
00:49:37 not just across a date line.
00:49:40 but going back a whole season.
00:49:41 That was a huge chunk of jet lag.
00:49:45 But when we left LA there was
00:49:49 because there was a feeling that.
00:49:53 The adventure was really about to begin
00:49:58 you get this idea that you're on the edge
00:50:03 Climb to 5300 and clear direct
00:50:07 - Six six six. the number of the beast.
00:50:52 Welcome home. Monterrey!
00:50:59 It's great to be in Mexico.
00:51:03 It is.
00:51:05 And you know what?
00:51:07 Every time we go south of the border.
00:51:35 Iron Maiden used to tour in the toughest
00:51:39 We're all working-class guys
00:51:41 and we have this kind of a credibility
00:51:44 Music meant a lot to people.
00:51:46 It was a way out. It was a release.
00:51:48 It's the same in Mexico.
00:51:52 They're singing. they're chanting
00:51:55 Latin American audiences.
00:51:59 The anxiety is. "Are we gonna be
00:52:02 We're just gonna give 1 50 per cent.
00:52:04 We've really got to deliver
00:52:07 that justifies our existence
00:54:10 Five quid. That's ten dollars.
00:54:14 All right. eight.
00:54:15 Beautiful.
00:54:18 350 dollars.
00:54:19 - You're joking.
00:54:21 It's very nice.
00:54:24 That is beautiful.
00:54:27 Look at that. boys and girls.
00:54:29 This is gonna look great on my mantelpiece
00:54:34 We've lost Janick.
00:54:35 As you may have gathered
00:54:39 Janick's a little bit of a lone soldier.
00:54:41 He runs off and disappears
00:54:44 Normally you find him
00:54:46 As there's no lrish bar here.
00:54:50 Last time we saw him.
00:54:54 There he is.
00:54:55 Where?
00:54:56 In front of us.
00:54:57 He's come back. I was just telling him
00:55:01 Yes. there he is. He's back. boys and girls.
00:55:04 Couldn't find the lrish pub
00:55:06 Janick is the jester. He's so funny.
00:55:11 Out he goes strutting around
00:55:15 Jan is someone
00:55:17 and we can talk for hours
00:55:20 He won't tell you this.
00:55:23 He's a very educated guy.
00:55:25 There's two sides to Janick.
00:55:28 He loves going to lrish bars
00:55:31 and other times he'll go out strutting.
00:55:33 Iike now he'll probably be out
00:55:37 He's a free spirit.
00:55:40 He never plays the same thing twice.
00:55:42 Sometimes the other guys in the band are
00:55:47 Shall we leave this downstairs?
00:55:49 Wow. Fantastic. Careful. Janick.
00:55:53 We've got to mind our heads here.
00:55:55 We've got to go through
00:56:03 Shit.
00:56:04 We are under the Sun Pyramid
00:56:07 and we're probably about 50 feet.
00:56:14 - So it's...
00:56:30 We know that the medicine tradition.
00:56:34 decide this day
00:56:38 to share it with your brothers
00:56:40 take all the love to the people that that's
00:56:45 Any message you want to deliver
00:56:48 I share this medicine of the spirits
00:56:52 and wish them health.
00:56:56 cherish the spirit and the bond
00:59:42 That was fucking insane.
00:59:45 You came in the wrong door.
00:59:47 I have never seen anything like that.
00:59:55 When the promoter suggested Costa Rica.
00:59:59 He said. "No. we're doing football stadium."'
01:00:03 It ended up being the biggest gig ever
01:00:06 It was sold out way upfront. 27 000
01:00:08 and anybody else they could cram in.
01:00:10 It was the biggest show they'd had
01:00:14 and we'd never been there before.
01:00:15 So it was new territory
01:00:19 It was like finding some weird tribe
01:00:22 and they all come out and go.
01:00:26 "What?"
01:00:42 Children Of The Damned!
01:00:49 When I was 1 4 or 1 5.
01:00:53 "This is amazing. Iron Maiden.
01:00:57 "No. Shame we live in the ass of the world."'
01:00:59 A lot of people have come here.
01:01:03 Nicaragua.
01:01:06 This is once in a lifetime.
01:01:08 I have a friend who quit his job
01:01:11 This is the thing. you know.
01:01:21 Maiden! Maiden!
01:01:23 Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!
01:01:32 We decided to go and play golf
01:01:35 So we get out on the first tee.
01:01:39 A fucking golf ball hit me on my wrist.
01:01:42 Within two minutes
01:01:45 My main concern was.
01:01:49 I'm a wounded soldier in battle.
01:01:52 Yeah. it's gonna swell up a bit more.
01:01:55 The doc's saying it'll be a couple of days
01:01:58 See. boys and girls?
01:02:01 Max-Fly number three.
01:02:03 - It was a shit ball. thank goodness.
01:02:06 - No. not at all.
01:02:10 Thank the Lord that it wasn't an inch lower.
01:02:13 Because we would have been going home.
01:02:15 It's ironic that with all the planning and
01:02:20 the half-an-inch trajectory of a golf ball...
01:02:22 And it would be Nicko. of course.
01:02:26 It could have brought
01:02:29 Your face. "You'd better be able to play."'
01:02:31 You'd better be able to play.
01:02:33 It'll be fine.
01:03:31 Scream for me. Costa Rica!
01:04:44 Scream for me. Costa Rica!
01:04:49 Scream for me. Costa Rica!
01:05:45 If it's like this at lmmigration. what's it
01:06:09 Good afternoon. everybody.
01:06:12 The show last night. phenomenal.
01:06:16 As Bruce said when we were in Mexico.
01:06:17 the further south we come down
01:06:22 And it became pretty hot last night.
01:06:24 The show was really good
01:06:28 So the Columbian audience tomorrow night.
01:06:32 Nicko's a larger-than-life character.
01:06:34 You send him into a room or a party.
01:06:37 he batters his way through
01:06:40 Then I just walk in behind him
01:06:43 Nicko is the social side of Maiden
01:06:47 We will go in the room. and sometimes
01:06:51 But he's a totally genuine. full-on...
01:06:53 and. again. a great part of the team.
01:06:56 They broke the mould
01:06:58 He's one of these people. the first time
01:07:02 What can you say about Nick?
01:07:07 Yeah. that'll do. won't it?
01:07:26 We'd never been to Columbia before
01:07:29 and we were playing this massive park
01:07:32 and all the way along there were tents.
01:07:34 They'd been out for a week. ten days.
01:07:38 I've never seen that before. ever.
01:07:40 Seeing that. your pulse rate goes up
01:07:58 Columbia was one of the places
01:08:01 that I was slightly apprehensive
01:08:04 because of the idea that
01:08:07 that it could get nasty.
01:08:09 Even though everybody was very happy.
01:08:11 you got the impression
01:08:15 and tolerated it on a day-to-day basis.
01:08:17 We've been here the whole week
01:08:21 They just take away everything.
01:08:25 - So it's pretty heavy security.
01:08:42 The atmosphere was charged.
01:08:46 It was only going to take a small thing
01:08:50 There is no fucking use to it.
01:08:53 They are fucking assholes.
01:08:55 They don't like metal. man.
01:08:58 The world knows that Columbia
01:09:03 But here the metal music is alive.
01:09:06 This is the main dream
01:09:09 I think that I'm going to cry here.
01:09:11 I may sound very emotional
01:09:15 because I grew up listening to lron Maiden.
01:09:33 Tell you what. the old altitude is...
01:09:36 You feeling it?
01:09:37 Big difference.
01:09:41 which is a good place to wake up.
01:09:43 But I was out of breath.
01:09:45 You're just in bed.
01:09:49 Oxzgen stage right.
01:10:03 I've got one on my jacket.
01:10:05 No. no. no!
01:10:07 Bruce. when you need oxzgen.
01:10:10 I could have done with oxzgen last night.
01:12:58 Come on!
01:14:33 Have a nice bottle of white. mate.
01:14:36 Look at that. Loads of that funny cheese
01:14:47 It's not bad.
01:14:49 I don't like the sweaty-feet cheese
01:14:52 But this ain't bad.
01:14:55 No. but nine o'clock is early to leave.
01:14:58 Is that the time we're leaving?
01:14:59 That's a 7:30 wake-up.
01:15:01 Eight o'clock. mate. pack up.
01:15:03 You've got to do the three S's. I can do them
01:15:08 I have the shave first. then the shower.
01:15:10 Then the shit. I can't even say it.
01:15:14 Does it confuse you if anything's
01:15:16 It does sometimes.
01:15:17 Like you wipe your bum with your razor
01:15:40 Please take a seat.
01:15:56 Brazil. for us. is where Latin America
01:16:00 We went down there just for one show.
01:16:04 Life-changing.
01:16:16 Run To The Hills!
01:16:21 The Rock In Rio in '85 was fantastic.
01:16:23 We flew in especially for one show.
01:16:26 and it was being televised live
01:16:29 The whole of South America
01:16:37 We came from upstate New York.
01:16:40 Went down to Rio.
01:16:44 Certainly not South America.
01:16:47 It was all a bit of a shock.
01:16:48 Excitable. passionate fans. and people
01:16:53 Being British. we're not used to that.
01:16:57 But the amazing thing is that it goes on
01:17:07 You got both signed. Are you happy?
01:17:09 Very happy. man.
01:17:12 Iron Maiden is my religion.
01:17:14 In Brazil. similar to Scandinavia.
01:17:18 because it means so much
01:17:21 But in some instances
01:17:24 There's a priest
01:17:27 who does sermons sometimes
01:18:18 Could you describe for us
01:22:40 They are crazy.
01:22:43 With the success of the band
01:22:45 you do get the corollary.
01:22:48 which is that you're really
01:22:52 You can't just go and amble out
01:22:58 Argentina was just a bit less subtle.
01:23:01 It was just 24/7.
01:23:05 The fans do get a bit much sometimes.
01:23:07 when you've been travelling
01:23:10 and have photos and look all cheerful.
01:23:13 Once you're in a hotel.
01:23:16 Outside the hotel. we're fair game.
01:25:26 Argentina!
01:27:36 ..Santiago. where the local time
01:27:40 Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!
01:28:17 This was the most out-of-control reception
01:28:21 It's ironic that we're in that situation now
01:28:24 because we were banned initially.
01:28:33 The once all-powerful Catholic church
01:28:38 and. unbelievably.
01:28:41 Maiden!
01:29:00 All they wanted to do was see the band.
01:29:04 They didn't want to start a revolution.
01:29:05 They just wanted to go and see
01:29:18 Scream for me. Santiago!
01:30:31 Santiago. Chile!
01:30:36 I want you.
01:30:41 And I want you!
01:30:45 And you!
01:30:48 And you down here. my friends.
01:30:56 Iron Maiden's gonna get you!
01:31:01 Iron Maiden's gonna get all of you!
01:32:14 This time around. you're playing
01:32:19 It's like saying to the fans.
01:32:23 "We're gonna revisit the catalogue."'
01:32:25 No.
01:32:26 - Not at all?
01:32:28 We're not some old fossil dragging
01:32:32 What you'll see tonight
01:32:35 It's the celebration
01:32:38 who have never seen us
01:32:40 Any time you go out and you play songs
01:32:44 there's going to be an element of people
01:32:48 But the purpose of this tour
01:32:51 because our entire audience
01:32:54 has been getting steadily younger.
01:32:56 So. as a big thank you.
01:32:58 Iarge Christmas present
01:33:01 here. have a classic
01:33:04 And that's why I get bent out of shape
01:33:07 any time anybody tries to play
01:33:10 and the tail they're trying to pin on us
01:33:12 is that this is some kind
01:33:16 And it's not that.
01:33:18 Is there a song or two
01:33:22 Tonight?
01:33:23 In general.
01:33:24 Tonight or as part of this current
01:33:27 Ancient Mariner.
01:33:28 - Is it really?
01:37:05 Once that plane landed in Toronto.
01:37:07 we knew the show would go ahead.
01:37:11 And if you look back
01:37:14 we played 21 cities. 23 shows.
01:37:17 It's the equivalent of playing
01:37:21 except those concerts
01:37:24 And we pulled it off.
01:37:26 There was a sense of elation
01:37:31 And then I just thought.
01:37:37 Maiden!
01:37:39 Maiden! Maiden!
01:37:48 Definitely in the great white north now.
01:37:50 You see the kids outside queuing up and
01:37:55 In the snow.
01:37:56 They're tough up here. man.
01:37:58 Looking forward to going home?
01:37:59 Yes. I am. I must say.
01:38:02 Just having my little bit of space.
01:38:05 One less documentary crew to contend with.
01:38:09 I think you guys
01:38:12 I was dreading it. actually.
01:38:15 - So another successful tour?
01:38:17 Quite gruelling.
01:38:18 It's been amazing. It's been gruelling.
01:38:22 Yeah.
01:38:23 In terms of audience...
01:38:27 it's been one of the best.
01:38:29 Yeah.
01:38:30 - How are you. Steve?
01:38:31 - Final show.
01:38:34 We made it.
01:38:35 Finally we made it. yeah.
01:38:37 Feels like we've been out about six months.
01:38:41 Dear boy. you must be happy
01:38:44 Indeed I am. thank you.
01:38:47 One more flight tomorrow.
01:38:51 And I shall be getting my sticks out
01:38:55 Have fun!
01:38:57 Thank you!
01:38:59 ..fight on the beaches.
01:39:01 we shall fight on the landing grounds.
01:39:03 we shall fight in the fields
01:39:07 we shall fight in the hills.
01:39:10 I think the essence of us
01:39:14 We do the music
01:39:17 It's not about money.
01:39:19 You can see we mean it and we enjoy it.
01:39:23 It's all about the music
01:39:25 We've done it our way.
01:39:29 We haven't become celebrities. We still go
01:39:33 Nobody has to bow down to us.
01:39:35 We play music. we enjoy it.
01:39:39 And if you don't like it. you know what?
01:39:42 It's a beautiful thing
01:39:45 doing the biggest tour we've ever done.
01:39:47 This is bigger than the '80s.

01:40:59 All people need is something
01:41:02 Somewhere there's something that you
01:41:06 And if Maiden fulfil that for people.
