00:01:58 Watching them, we can reflect,
00:02:01 not only on their complex behavior,
00:02:03 but on our own as well.
00:02:09 Join us for a few moments
00:02:11 and Reflections on Elephants.
00:03:06 Africa seldom relaxes.
00:03:08 It always seems to be waiting
00:03:10 for the gentler moments to pass.

00:04:12 With a life-span of 60 years
00:04:15 elephants pursue the rhythms
00:04:17 of life at a leisurely but
00:04:31 Each movement is a calculated
00:04:35 each day a tiny investment
00:04:44 In the crisp morning a herd
00:04:47 pads in silently from
00:04:51 It is unusual for females like
00:04:53 these to wander into the
00:04:55 But they are anxious.
00:04:58 It's been an eventful night.
00:05:00 A calf was born to the matriarch,
00:05:02 the leader of this herd.
00:05:13 From the first day
00:05:30 The youngster is a female
00:05:32 and she will be guided carefully
00:05:34 through life by her mother
00:05:35 and the other family members.
00:05:42 Because elephant societies
00:05:46 and her mother is a matriarch,
00:05:48 It is likely that one day
00:05:49 she too will have to carry on
00:05:51 that tradition of leadership.
00:05:56 But for now she seems
00:05:57 blissfully unaware of the
00:06:01 more concerned with keeping close

00:06:19 For this young calf,
00:06:21 lions will be a recurring
00:06:35 Towering giants block the way.
00:06:37 The determined opportunist
00:06:45 When the calf flounders
00:06:47 in the unfamiliar muddy water,
00:06:50 But at this age,
00:07:01 They bunch together,
00:07:03 protecting her within a wall
00:07:06 Even the females have tusks
00:07:11 Safe against the bank,
00:07:13 the little female has to contend
00:07:14 with another new challenge
00:07:17 The first bowel movement,
00:07:19 an unbalancing and
00:07:32 With the lions still menacing,
00:07:34 the matriarch must soon
00:07:35 out of the water hole
00:07:41 With her front toenails
00:07:43 making a ramp for the short
00:08:22 As she leads her family
00:08:25 The matriarch's bloodstained
00:08:27 legs are a testament to
00:08:30 and a new beginning
00:08:32 The start of a long journey.
00:08:40 This journey takes place
00:08:44 Once elephants roamed over
00:08:48 They still wander freely over all of

00:10:42 just vibrations floating
00:11:07 Ahead, at the next water hole,
00:11:13 Another calf has been
00:11:14 abandoned in the first few
00:11:24 Sometimes sick or old females
00:11:28 do leave infant calves to fend
00:11:42 Innocent to the virtues of
00:11:45 the young elephant calls out
00:11:52 The cry in answered.
00:12:01 But the hyena is nervous, wary
00:12:05 When the matriarch leads her
00:12:09 they are drawn to the disturbance.
00:12:30 But with a long journey ahead,
00:12:32 this abandoned calf could be
00:12:42 And he is rejected.
00:13:01 Perhaps the calls are too chilling,
00:13:18 The calf is caught up in the
00:13:22 and swept off into the dark.
00:13:51 Adoption is rare in
00:13:54 but by daybreak the rescued
00:13:57 calf is part of the herd.
00:14:02 Now, however, he has even
00:14:08 It's an adoption,
00:14:09 but by some strange twist of fate,
00:14:14 Who already has her
00:14:20 He is immediately seen
00:14:23 for the rich-flavored milk.
00:14:43 Elephants rarely have

00:14:52 or the calf found the only

00:14:58 But his rescue is no
00:15:03 Now he faces a new threat...

00:16:10 acacias yields fatty acids
00:16:16 It is thought that the fiber

00:17:33 These newborn can be
00:17:36 and must be well guarded.
00:17:38 Often the older calves must
00:17:53 As harsh as it may seem,
00:17:57 With animals that live so long
00:17:59 some deaths are important to
00:18:04 Only in paradise is death banned
00:18:24 At the water hole a lone male suddenly
00:18:33 It is the time of his musth.
00:18:43 Like the new dawn, this feeling
00:18:47 He can take on anything.
00:19:05 Musth comes to males
00:19:08 But only begins halfway
00:19:11 This is their breeding phase,
00:19:13 when high levels of testosterone turn
00:19:20 Another bull has the same

00:20:05 This victorious bull has already

00:20:13 As he draws nearer,
00:20:18 And the chase is on.
00:20:23 He hunts her down.
00:20:25 She knows she is being hunted,
00:20:28 and with a smaller body weight
00:20:29 She could easily outrun him as

00:20:51 This coordinates sexual readiness
00:20:54 is quite unique in animals

00:21:00 By soliciting this musth bull,
00:21:03 she has purposely

00:22:55 Greetings are very active
00:23:09 Screams of tension drive out
00:23:12 Elephants tend to
00:23:19 But the large water holes
00:23:23 Both wanderers and regulars
00:23:26 All mass together,

00:23:39 These gentle animals appear to
00:23:47 With language skills of at least
00:23:51 A complex "stacking" system is
00:23:56 When incoming herds signal,
00:23:58 the herd that was drinking

00:24:15 Over the last two months
00:24:19 Smaller calf seems to have
00:24:40 The water is still an unfamiliar
00:24:56 The adopted calf,
00:24:57 possibly with less

00:25:25 Others are here for the
00:25:28 As hundreds of buffalo
00:25:31 stress rumbles through the elephant

00:26:25 The elephants divide their efforts.
00:26:28 Some fend off the buffalo while
00:26:56 Just a gentle stabilizer is needed
00:27:08 And still the matriarch
00:27:11 They need water before attempting
00:27:15 In their eagerness to drink,
00:27:17 adopted calf is shoved over
00:27:25 Now the danger of a buffalo
00:27:29 The thick mud sucks
00:27:47 Following the matriarch's lead
00:28:05 Desperate attempts to break down
00:28:26 The two females combine efforts,
00:28:28 using tusks and trunks like shovels
00:28:33 while another digs a ramp.
00:28:43 Together the two females squeeze
00:28:47 The suction underneath is
00:28:51 and the calf is free at last.
00:29:13 They tenderly reassure
00:29:16 rescued for the second time
00:29:19 The concerned herd now bunches
00:29:28 Outrage runs like wildfire
00:29:31 sparking explosions of aggression.
00:29:47 But the buffalo keep pouring
00:29:50 and dust hangs like smoke
00:30:03 The contest is finally resolved.
00:30:07 As the dust settles,
00:30:15 Somewhere in the confusion,
00:30:17 a young buffalo was struck
00:30:21 The calf is doomed,
00:30:31 The two calves move off
00:30:34 Having avoided a
00:30:37 The young buffalo's broken

00:31:35 A shuffle of constant adjustment
00:31:38 in a display of dominance
00:32:07 Each one of these bulls has a rank
00:32:09 each responds to the next one.

00:32:25 soon learns the rules of
00:32:33 Status is determined
00:32:37 tusks have little to do with it.
00:32:49 The contest is for water,
00:32:52 In a classic bull area like Savuti,
00:32:55 up to 200 elephants compete
00:33:00 In this melee they must constantly
00:33:05 A sensitive tail is an advantage.
00:33:32 With their head used like
00:33:36 bodies jostle and tusks joust
00:33:51 This struggle may seem like a
00:33:55 But with each changing combination,
00:33:57 the field plan of the hierarchy is reset
00:34:12 One ghostly form is excluded
00:34:17 His gaunt features and
00:34:20 are sure signs of his age
00:34:32 With his last set of grinding
00:34:36 his days are numbered.
00:34:52 Too weak to join in,
00:34:54 he can only watch the
00:35:04 By dusk his body cries out for the
00:35:14 He can no longer resist,
00:35:16 and with fewer bulls around the water,
00:35:23 Drawing himself up
00:35:25 he forces himself into the circle.
00:35:29 At last the drinks.
00:35:35 When a mud-covered,
00:35:38 the ghostly elephant
00:35:41 But the water still
00:35:44 It is a mistake.
00:35:47 A jagged tusk slices through
00:35:52 The old bull goes down
00:35:55 losing blood fast.
00:36:21 Even before the old bull dies,
00:36:23 a young male carries out a
00:36:28 This behavior can only
00:36:31 as an attempt to upgrade
00:36:34 his own status with this
00:36:39 The old bull dies quickly
00:36:44 though his fate was

00:36:55 a useless endeavor.
00:36:57 His body must continue
00:37:01 even after his death.
00:37:14 Like an ancient burial ritual,
00:37:17 attention is paid
00:37:53 We don't yet understand
00:37:57 Is it a macabre fascination
00:38:01 or perhaps a tribute to
00:38:10 And why is the ivory so often
00:38:12 the focus of these haunting
00:38:27 As a week passes,

00:38:47 As the last scavengers squabble
00:38:51 A few bulls remain,
00:38:54 perhaps still nurturing a special bond
00:39:22 Before we could really understand
00:39:28 The bull's spirit floats away.
00:39:34 Eight days and what was once
00:39:39 is no more than just a memory,
00:39:44 when elephants roamed Africa
00:39:46 from sea to sea and
00:40:02 Once again the clans are gathering,
00:40:06 Paths interlace,
00:40:08 leaving behind a swath
00:40:26 This constant ebb and
00:40:28 affects some areas
00:40:31 A balance that is
00:40:40 The females head for the best
00:40:43 not only for the living,
00:41:00 The final miles are covered
00:41:05 Here the matriarch and
00:41:08 the next three months
00:41:25 Even in this chaotic clamor
00:41:28 The elephants show a sensitivity
00:41:32 and where their other clan
00:41:45 After a grueling six months,
00:41:47 possibly sensing that their
00:41:51 take on a new playfulness
00:42:11 But now when the oppressive
00:42:16 They can hide from its burning fingers
00:42:26 Gradually the elephants drop down
00:42:31 both young and old drifting
00:43:01 For them there are easy ways to
00:43:26 They seldom allow themselves
00:43:30 Just a few minutes at a time are needed
00:44:15 Only when they are all up
00:44:18 lead them out of the shade,
00:44:20 always keeping the herd together.
00:44:27 But sometimes things go wrong.
00:44:35 Occasionally calves are left
00:44:39 Testing each herd they approach.
00:44:43 When he sees the matriarch
00:44:46 this young male is turned away
00:44:49 His best chance of being found
00:44:54 Despite their

00:44:59 Newborn calves have begun to

00:45:11 his real family is across the

00:45:30 the juvenile is

00:45:42 The lions are young and seem more

00:47:07 The calf responds,
00:47:08 surprising the lions with his
00:47:15 As they watch, he slips away.
00:47:19 What emotions elephants feel during
00:47:24 That they do feel something
00:47:32 Back in the bull area,
00:47:34 when old bones have
00:47:38 The mud relinquishes

00:47:52 Like a trophy,
00:47:53 it is carried into the open,
00:47:59 Like a memory,
00:48:26 This haunting behavior is
00:48:30 How can we ever know
00:48:34 and what form these emotions take
00:48:38 A mystery, forever.
00:48:53 When they attempt to destroy ivory
00:48:58 or try to crush tusks
00:49:01 are they displaying a
00:49:04 a solemn response to the
00:49:09 Or is this an ancient ritual
00:49:12 At the river the matriarch
00:49:29 leads her herd on a final push
00:49:44 Swimming is little
00:49:53 They share an ancestry with seagoing
00:49:59 Large, vacant, nasal and sinus cavities
00:50:04 and their fat makes
00:50:21 On the south bank a timid

00:50:42 By now the young bull has given up
00:50:51 The herd's ancient knowledge
00:50:56 For when they finally emerge
00:50:58 They have crossed into another
00:51:11 The stranded young bull still
00:51:18 The herd is now fair game for
00:51:23 A wave of communication flashes back
00:51:30 Then, reacting as one,
00:51:34 they plunge into the water
00:51:51 Although by now the
00:51:53 are at risk of drowning
00:51:56 A fatal conflict with man
00:52:03 On the south bank greetings and
00:52:08 But he will not be persuaded.
00:52:10 The herd gives up and remains
00:52:12 on the familiar and safer
00:52:17 The end of the restless
00:52:19 and her calves, for this year.
00:52:30 This may be the last
00:52:32 to traverse these ancestral ranges,
00:52:36 the last truly free elephants.
00:52:41 As we succeed more
00:52:45 They seem to trickle further
00:52:50 It has been said
00:52:52 than mold our own lives
00:52:56 Lives filled with dignity
00:53:02 Perhaps we need more time
00:53:05 celebrations of life and death
00:53:08 that are like silent whispers
00:53:11 more time for reflections on elephants
