A Mighty Wind

en
00:00:34 In the news tonight...
00:00:36 ...the music world mourns the death
00:00:40 ...an instrumental figure
00:00:43 ...from its humble beginnings in the 1950s
00:00:48 Steinbloom managed the careers
00:00:52 ...The Main Street Singers,
00:00:55 ...and the sweethearts
00:00:59 Their music was the voice of a generation.
00:01:01 It carried a message of peace and freedom...
00:01:03 ...and young people got behind
00:01:06 Steinbloom is survived
00:01:17 What do you say, Mitch? It's up to you.
00:01:22 Yes, we do. We have all three Folksmen.
00:01:25 Of course, Alan, of course.
00:01:28 We can't imagine doing this without you.
00:01:32 We cannot conceive of doing this--
00:01:36 It seemed that the only fitting tribute
00:01:41 And I have to tell you,
00:01:47 And the only fitting tribute we could
00:01:51 ...that would be a concert
00:01:54 ...by all of the fabulous groups
00:02:00 It's gonna be very fast. It's gonna be in
00:02:05 ...because where else could we have
00:02:09 And they had a hole in the schedule.
00:02:12 But it's a very sudden hole...
00:02:14 ...and we've got two weeks
00:02:22 But I'm pretty organized myself.
00:02:24 I've always been a very organized person.
00:02:27 When I was 12, I formed the J.C.P.L.,
00:02:33 We rode Shetland ponies instead of horses.
00:02:38 "Well, if he has to fall,
00:02:42 She was very protective.
00:02:45 I just like to think she cared about me.
00:02:49 And I was a member of the chess team.
00:02:51 And whenever we had chess tournaments,
00:02:55 I had to wear a football helmet.
00:02:59 Maybe she thought
00:03:02 ...and impaled our heads on a pointy
00:03:06 Now they don't allow no frowns inside
00:03:11 -There's apple brandy by the keg
00:03:15 So if you've got a hankering
00:03:19 Just look for the busted neon sign
00:03:23 Ea-a-oe's
00:03:26 Well, there's a puppy in the parlor
00:03:35 Hello, Mr. Stranger Man
00:03:39 -Who is that?
00:03:43 No!
00:03:47 I'll take some of that.
00:03:49 -Mr. Palter has an altar, I see.
00:03:54 -I knew you looked familiar.
00:03:56 I think I used to work with your kids.
00:04:00 Mark and I met at
00:04:04 Late '61 .
00:04:05 We were both interested in folk music,
00:04:11 ...as there were on many colleges.
00:04:15 -Two. T-W-O.
00:04:17 Because there were two of us.
00:04:21 -Mark was a bass, really, a bass singer.
00:04:25 And I was a tenor singer up there.
00:04:29 No glue. No middle, no....
00:04:31 Vocalist. We went to New York
00:04:35 -We were playing at a place....
00:04:37 At The Folk Place, which was a wonderful
00:04:42 It was the flash point.
00:04:44 Everyone-- It was Like a big magnet,
00:04:47 -He was singing, he was backing people up--
00:04:52 If you have enough vibrato on those blue
00:04:58 I was drawn to the folk music as well
00:05:02 ...and met these two guys.
00:05:04 I could play the guitar. I could sing right
00:05:09 -Not a bad-looking gent, to boot.
00:05:13 We ended up getting together
00:05:16 -It clicked.
00:05:17 And Mr. Irving Steinbloom came down
00:05:22 -...which was the label to be on.
00:05:25 Later on we were
00:05:29 ...to the Folk Tone Label
00:05:33 It was a decent Label,
00:05:36 -They didn't have any distribution.
00:05:39 And the covers were printed
00:05:42 ...which I noticed was a problem.
00:05:45 And they had no hole
00:05:48 No, you had to provide it yourself.
00:05:50 So the people complained
00:05:54 -...and it's up to you to center it.
00:05:59 And that was, of course, we had
00:06:03 They were still good records.
00:06:05 If you punched a hole in them,
00:06:08 It's scary but it's true
00:06:17 I guess it was in about 1958
00:06:22 My partner Chuck Wiseman
00:06:25 ...with Fred Knox and Bill Weyburn.
00:06:28 We were lucky to be joined by one
00:06:33 ...any generation, as a matter of fact,
00:06:38 And we became the Village Folk Ensemble.
00:06:42 And we were a great group. Great.
00:06:46 ...but I always thought we should have
00:06:50 And one night in 1960,
00:06:55 ...we were at a hootenanny and we
00:06:59 And all of a sudden, I heard it.
00:07:03 The harmonics were amazing.
00:07:06 I thought, "Well, there's five of us,
00:07:12 And it was there, just in a moment,
00:07:15 The neuf-tet sound.
00:07:17 This thing clicked with The Klappers
00:07:21 ...and became The Main Street Singers.
00:07:25 Well, 10 years and 30 albums later,
00:07:31 My partner Chuck Wiseman and myself,
00:07:35 I went my way and Chuck went his.
00:07:38 In 1971 , after the breakup
00:07:44 ...Chuck Wiseman moved to San Francisco
00:07:47 ...with his two brothers.
00:07:51 It was very successful for a year...
00:07:54 ...until they were sued over something
00:07:58 No, I need you, Mitch.
00:08:01 That's the thing. You go together.
00:08:04 I love Mickey, but without you
00:08:09 I'm gonna tell you something, Mitch,
00:08:15 You were Dad's favorite. Okay.
00:08:17 Just deal with it. You were Dad's favorite.
00:08:21 Two weeks before he died
00:08:26 "Of all those ferkakte people,
00:08:30 He's like a relative,
00:08:33 I'm saying this because I think you'd want
00:08:37 Would you just think about it?
00:08:49 Sounds cliche, but it's kind of a blur,
00:08:53 I guess we were, in a way, maybe easy
00:09:01 ...true Love and romance
00:09:04 To be quite honest, I bought
00:09:09 Maybe that's why I sold it so well.
00:09:12 Because it was sweet and happy...
00:09:15 ...and everybody, everybody
00:09:18 They tried to get close to him,
00:09:23 He was very smart, very intense...
00:09:28 ...and distant, you know?
00:09:30 You'd get close to him and he'd inch back
00:09:34 And you'd move in,
00:09:38 ...and he'd just back off a little more.
00:09:40 Just always kept you wanting to get there,
00:09:45 Which was impossible.
00:09:47 Oh, when the veil of dreams has lifted
00:09:55 And the fairy tales have all been told
00:09:58 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
00:10:06 More precious than a pot of gold
00:10:17 The phenomenon of that kiss was....
00:10:21 It can't be overstated.
00:10:23 It was...
00:10:27 ...a superb moment
00:10:32 And maybe...
00:10:34 ...maybe a great moment
00:10:38 I'd Like to think that Mitch
00:10:46 Because I already said yes.
00:10:51 No, I didn't think this through.
00:10:53 Should've talked to him beforehand,
00:10:59 It wasn't....
00:11:03 You know, those last few years....
00:11:07 Okay, I'm remembering some things now,
00:11:13 And I think for a while we were able...
00:11:17 ...to keep it on a professional level.
00:11:21 But really, we were getting
00:11:26 I was just out of high school,
00:11:31 And I must say I was in awe of Mitch
00:11:36 They were here working on
00:11:39 ...which was their Last album together.
00:11:41 Mickey started shouting at Mitch.
00:11:45 She started throwing anything she could
00:11:50 Music stands, microphone stands,
00:11:56 And Mitch....
00:12:00 He just....
00:12:03 He just snapped.
00:12:08 It's time to kick on back
00:12:17 Cartwheels and piggybacks
00:12:23 I'm sitting on a hill
00:12:30 Well, I've been playing
00:12:34 ...my whole life, I mean,
00:12:38 I've come to understand as an adult,
00:12:45 ...that there had been abuse in my family,
00:12:51 My father used to
00:12:55 ...with nothing but the Percy Faith
00:12:59 ...and then send me to bed
00:13:04 One of the records he put me
00:13:07 The Main Street Singers, 1968.
00:13:10 I tell you, my head opened up,
00:13:13 I listened to that record
00:13:16 I knew it right and left
00:13:19 I feel Like I knew those people.
00:13:25 ...that at the age of 8 years old,
00:13:29 ...and I made cardboard cutouts of
00:13:34 These were my friends,
00:13:38 It's odd that Laurie
00:13:41 Right. A completely different path.
00:13:43 I was brought up in a very small town,
00:13:47 Just far enough away to have been peopled
00:13:52 And because I was one of so many children,
00:13:57 ...when I blew town at 15
00:14:02 And it's at this point in my story
00:14:06 ...because I met a certain Mr. Wiseman,
00:14:11 And before Long, he tapped me
00:14:15 ...in some of his short films
00:14:20 And before Long, I had landed,
00:14:24 ...and then I started to do some cameos.
00:14:29 Well, I was known for
00:14:33 ...that many of the other girls
00:14:36 Of course, I Loved to sing,
00:14:40 And I learned to play the ukulele
00:14:45 And based on that, my world opened up...
00:14:48 ...because I was invited to join the
00:14:52 And that's where I met my man,
00:14:58 Ain't that something?
00:15:00 -A beautiful story.
00:15:03 Last week you were
00:15:06 ...and you never showed up.
00:15:09 -He's in. Mitch is in.
00:15:11 -It's unbelievable.
00:15:13 -Thank you. Thank you.
00:15:16 -Yes.
00:15:19 -Yeah, I think he did.
00:15:23 I'm sorr--
00:15:26 Let's not rain on the parade, okay?
00:15:30 In 1974, after the breakup,
00:15:35 His first solo album...
00:15:37 ...a Cry For Help, contained
00:15:42 ..."Anyone But You," "May She Rot in Hell."
00:15:46 And this just spiraled down...
00:15:50 ...to the next album, Calling It Quits.
00:15:55 And at that point he was in a very bad way.
00:16:18 There was a lot of anger in Mitch...
00:16:27 ...for reasons, you know, that he had.
00:16:30 I think he went too soon.
00:16:34 He should have stayed longer,
00:16:40 And his anger was unhealthy...
00:16:45 ...for all of us.
00:16:54 -Hello, Mickey.
00:16:56 -How are you?
00:16:58 -It's good to see you.
00:17:01 -Mitch Cohen, this is my husband.
00:17:05 -It's nice to meet you.
00:17:08 Thank you very much.
00:17:12 Left my things there.
00:17:15 -Good.
00:17:17 I don't know the name.
00:17:20 I can't remember the name,
00:17:23 Are you hungry?
00:17:25 -Yes.
00:17:27 Maybe you'd Like to
00:17:30 Oh, yes. Do you Like trains?
00:17:32 I took a bus.
00:17:34 No. Model trains.
00:17:38 -Sure.
00:17:41 I'll show you around.
00:17:43 -It was a 16-hour trip.
00:17:54 This whole area here is called Crabbe Town.
00:17:58 We've got a brothel
00:18:02 And right down there, further along,
00:18:06 -I've actually got a bit of French blood.
00:18:13 I think Crabbeville in autumn
00:18:18 I would have made tiny Little leaves...
00:18:23 ...oak, poplar, maple, chestnut...
00:18:27 ...and spread them
00:18:33 Magnificent.
00:18:37 It's Crabbe Town, not Crabbeville.
00:18:54 What is it you do, Leonard?
00:19:00 For work?
00:19:01 Oh, work.
00:19:03 I'm in the bladder management industry.
00:19:07 I sell catheters.
00:19:09 I have my own distribution company.
00:19:13 May have heard of it.
00:19:15 It's actually named in tribute after
00:19:19 It's a growth industry, really,
00:19:24 ...either have a flaccid
00:19:28 ...so, in a sense, every 13.5 seconds,
00:19:33 People Like you and I have
00:19:37 They can be running, playing tennis,
00:19:41 The good old constipation, you know?
00:19:43 You have impacted fecal mass
00:19:47 This might make good dessert talk.
00:19:51 I started playing folk clubs
00:19:56 ...and walked into one such
00:20:02 -Half Moon Cafe.
00:20:06 I was playing with my sisters,
00:20:10 We were the North Four.
00:20:12 We were on-stage
00:20:15 A Little guy, but with
00:20:19 And just, you know, "Take off your tops"
00:20:24 "You sing Like crap! You get off the stage!"
00:20:29 Very inarticulate. Rude.
00:20:33 Mean. Mean Little bugger.
00:20:36 ALL of a sudden, we couldn't see clear,
00:20:39 ...but I see this tall, dark figure go over
00:20:44 ...something going on,
00:20:51 -The crap pummeled out of him.
00:20:54 But the next thing I know,
00:20:59 ...was a beautiful rose sitting in a vase
00:21:06 And I can't express...
00:21:09 ...what was surging through my body.
00:21:16 I was consumed with an emotion...
00:21:19 ...that I had never felt before.
00:21:25 We started singing together.
00:21:29 We simply fused together...
00:21:32 ...in a very meaningful way.
00:21:36 And before you know it, we were recording.
00:21:40 -I Learned to sing with Mitch.
00:21:43 So scary, so scary. But I just....
00:21:46 Mitch was so strong and so smart
00:21:50 ...and I just focused on Mitch.
00:21:53 You know,
00:21:56 One, two, three, and....
00:22:00 -Wait. I doubled after you?
00:22:05 -You climb aboard the ferry at the same time.
00:22:10 One, two, three, and....
00:22:27 My mama was the cold north wind
00:22:30 My daddy was the son of a railroad man
00:22:35 From west of hell
00:22:42 Never heard the whistle
00:22:46 Or the humming of its driving wheel
00:22:49 No, I never did no wandering
00:22:53 Never did no wandering
00:22:58 Never did no wandering after all
00:23:05 I just, sorry, I just got a mental picture
00:23:12 And we weren't wearing the old stuff,
00:23:18 We're talking about the dickeys?
00:23:22 You were Mr. Drop-the-dickey.
00:23:25 -It's just a very retro look.
00:23:30 It sounds Like you're thinking
00:23:33 ...was a retro image of something that
00:23:38 -...because we were then.
00:23:41 ...but now, to try a retro thing,
00:23:44 -I mean....
00:23:47 To do then then
00:23:53 I know we're getting emotional with things
00:23:57 ...to be a great thing for you know who,
00:24:00 For Dad. Can't you say it? For Dad.
00:24:05 You can't say his name, can you?
00:24:07 You're not the only one
00:24:10 You're not the only person
00:24:12 You don't have to take everything personally.
00:24:17 I'm sorry. Forgive me. Never mind.
00:24:19 This isn't really just
00:24:22 It's also a reunion for the Steinbloom family,
00:24:27 -Because we never get together.
00:24:32 -We talk. A Lot. We talk a Lot.
00:24:36 -We don't really see each other.
00:24:40 I moved away to North Dakota.
00:24:42 I tried to get far away
00:24:45 I didn't care for folk music
00:24:50 So I haven't kept up our ties.
00:24:54 Hopefully we can get
00:24:57 ...and put on a good show for Dad.
00:25:01 You Like to make amends, but you can't,
00:25:05 Music.
00:25:08 You okay?
00:25:11 Let's just hang on.
00:25:15 Oh, Jesus.
00:25:31 My dad, Fred Knox,
00:25:34 ...so I grew up with this kind of music.
00:25:39 So I Listened to it when I was Little.
00:25:42 But I didn't hear much of it when
00:25:47 I was on the streets.
00:25:50 I was really rescued by
00:25:53 ...and they really
00:25:58 ...dark, that darkness.
00:26:00 And....
00:26:03 So when I sing, I want
00:26:07 And I want to be, you know,
00:26:11 ...and I want to entertain
00:26:15 So I Look for someone out in the audience
00:26:20 So when Mr. Menschell
00:26:23 ...and asked me to be a part
00:26:30 "Well, yeah."
00:26:38 Going home
00:26:42 Go--
00:26:45 Go
00:26:50 Going home
00:26:58 Home
00:27:07 Home
00:27:12 Go--
00:27:20 Quick plugola, I'm Mike LaFontaine, owner
00:27:27 Comic's constant companion.
00:27:29 Let's start right out.
00:27:33 As you know, back in 1970....
00:27:38 Every time something would go wrong,
00:27:41 "Hey, wha' happened?"
00:27:44 We had fun with that
00:27:47 "I got a real red wagon!"
00:27:49 And, "I can't do my work!"
00:27:53 And I believe I was the first one
00:27:58 It lasted a year. That's good because
00:28:04 I was on-stage doing my shtick, "Hey,
00:28:09 If someone would heckle me, they'd
00:28:12 I would say, "That's right!"
00:28:16 But I noticed a guy sitting down front
00:28:20 So I said to the lady next to him:
00:28:22 "Hold your mirror up in front
00:28:26 To see if there's a reflection."
00:28:30 After the show I go down and introduce
00:28:35 He had been with a group called
00:28:38 I was never into folk music.
00:28:43 Put him in a cell with a long hose on him
00:28:46 I used to say,
00:28:49 ...he's gonna have friends
00:28:53 Folk audiences hated that joke.
00:28:56 "Seriously, you've put up
00:28:59 If you re-form your group, I can send
00:29:04 Together, we could make a fortune
00:29:07 They used to go out, come back, they had
00:29:13 ...dysentery broke out on the ship.
00:29:16 You do not want to be on a cruise ship
00:29:19 ...and knock on the men's room door,
00:29:23 ...and hear, "I don't think so!"
00:29:26 I'm so glad to be here.
00:29:29 I Love what you do here.
00:29:33 That's what I wanted to start by saying.
00:29:37 And I'm very, very happy
00:29:41 It's a perfect fit.
00:29:45 ...and that can be a minus
00:29:48 In this case, it's a plus because
00:29:51 ...all the groups
00:29:54 And, you know, I think it's gonna
00:29:59 ...which is when we'd propose
00:30:02 If you don't mind me saying, our audience
00:30:06 Not radically younger.
00:30:09 If we can get two dozen young people
00:30:13 ...I think people here would be happy
00:30:17 This is great and I want to tell you...
00:30:20 ...if you're not weary of hearing stories about
00:30:25 A young kid by the name of Lars Olfen,
00:30:30 I'm 16 years old and it was raining.
00:30:33 And I got right up to the box office
00:30:38 ...the door slammed shut.
00:30:41 My young tears mixed with the rain,
00:30:45 "Hey, kid, over here."
00:30:48 Who is this guy? I can't afford
00:30:51 But he looks kind of familiar
00:30:54 He hands me two tickets,
00:30:57 It's your father. Why would he do that?
00:31:01 That was Dad, you know.
00:31:04 And he was generous, he was kind and
00:31:09 ...to pay back this much back
00:31:12 The naches I'm feeling right now.
00:31:16 When I heard I got these tickets to
00:31:20 ...and I'm running with
00:31:23 ...right into the theater,
00:31:26 We've got the schpilkes
00:31:28 It's a mitzvah what your dad did,
00:31:32 Okeinhoreh, I say, and God bless him.
00:31:37 Where did I go up? I remember hitting a....
00:31:40 We shared a song
00:31:43 I think it might be on "the ravens,"
00:31:46 "We shared."
00:31:48 Stay on: We shared
00:31:50 Wandered
00:31:52 Wandered through each other's secrets
00:31:57 We traded
00:32:01 We traded
00:32:02 You're right! Mitch, you're right!
00:32:06 We traded an honored worth
00:32:16 That's it, nice and crisp!
00:32:18 That's very nice.
00:32:20 Walking down to Main Street
00:32:24 There you go.
00:32:30 What are you singing there?
00:32:33 You singing the root?
00:32:34 No, I was singing:
00:32:38 Didn't I give you a sixth?
00:32:40 -I don't think so.
00:32:43 I think you were singing the sixth.
00:32:45 -Can you sing me a sixth?
00:32:48 -Everybody gonna sing
00:32:50 -Yeah, I can sing that. Sure.
00:32:54 What? Yeah?
00:32:56 -Go ahead.
00:32:59 No, I was gonna--
00:33:00 Can I switch?
00:33:03 Costume? Are you hot?
00:33:05 Yeah. But also, I mean...
00:33:08 ...I've been wearing it for a month.
00:33:10 You know the policy.
00:33:12 We all gotta wear the uniform
00:33:15 You're close, I just don't think
00:33:18 You did not sing that sixth,
00:33:22 You just wear what you have on.
00:33:24 Eventually you'll be able to wear
00:33:28 Jonathan? Hi.
00:33:31 Well, I got good news and better news.
00:33:33 Good news is, we're still doing the concert.
00:33:39 Yeah.
00:33:41 I got a friend, at NO AA, so we're going up
00:33:45 He's got some bandwidth there,
00:33:48 Yeah, the corporate underwriters
00:33:53 I'm excited too!
00:33:57 Okay. Okay.
00:33:59 Shalom.
00:34:01 Folk music is in my blood.
00:34:04 As a young boy, in Sweden-- I was born
00:34:09 ...but we'd go back to Sweden every
00:34:13 ...which was a flip from the normal thing.
00:34:15 Every Olfen kid, Lars, Sven, Pippi
00:34:20 When you could hold a rattle, you'd
00:34:25 I had a garage band in Stockholm,
00:34:29 ...to keep an instrument tuned
00:34:32 There's a block warmer
00:34:35 ...but it's cold in there in the winter.
00:34:37 So we played and I had a hit
00:34:41 Which means, "How's It Hanging, Grandma?"
00:34:45 I got in touch with the American music.
00:34:50 ...so I came here
00:34:53 I'm so happy to be here and come
00:34:58 It's a dream come true.
00:35:00 I worked the fields my father worked
00:35:04 From dawn till setting sun
00:35:07 Then it quiets down.
00:35:09 And the skeletons of Quinto
00:35:12 Call me home
00:35:21 "The silver tentacles of the moon's rays
00:35:24 That's really getting confusing.
00:35:28 It's really confusing. I'm hearing you
00:35:32 Maybe if I did it higher
00:35:36 -If you do what you did before.
00:35:41 But that's-- Now it sounds
00:35:45 Can I make the radical suggestion
00:35:49 ...to start with?
00:35:53 We don't want people
00:35:56 It's public television.
00:35:58 -They don't have remotes.
00:36:01 My God, that's terrible. What do you mean
00:36:05 Have you talked to him? Has he talked to
00:36:09 I know he's anxious.
00:36:13 You know, I mean,
00:36:16 You want me to-- You mean,
00:36:19 I Like him, I don't have that much
00:36:22 I could be empathetic.
00:36:25 I could sit, I could try.
00:36:28 I'LL talk to him. I'm happy to.
00:36:33 We're not broadcasting from a motel room.
00:36:39 What's happening here?
00:36:42 -What are you getting?
00:36:46 But there's a lightness within it, as well.
00:36:49 Interesting. You know, honey,
00:36:53 Terry and I worship
00:36:57 The power of another dimension.
00:37:00 Now, you're not going to read about this
00:37:06 ...or in a newspaper...
00:37:07 ...because it doesn't exist anywhere...
00:37:10 ...except in my own mind.
00:37:14 Through our ceremonies and our rituals...
00:37:17 ...we have witnessed firsthand...
00:37:20 ...the awesome
00:37:26 We experience it as alive...
00:37:29 ...and constantly shaping
00:37:33 And we believe that
00:37:37 ...is the basis of all creation.
00:37:42 We are WINC. W-I-N-C.
00:37:47 Witches In Nature's Colors. WINC.
00:37:54 The word "witch " may be a problem for
00:37:58 No, we do not ride around
00:38:03 Well, we don't ride on broomsticks.
00:38:06 This is not an occult science.
00:38:08 This is not one of those crazy systems...
00:38:13 ...of divination and astrology.
00:38:15 ...and you gotta have a screw loose
00:38:18 Our beliefs are fairly commonplace
00:38:23 Humankind is simply materialized color...
00:38:26 ...operating on the 49th vibration.
00:38:30 ...walking down the street
00:38:33 I know this is a lot of pressure
00:38:37 And I don't want you to feel you have
00:38:40 This is a one-day-at-a-time kind of thing.
00:38:43 Don't think you have to achieve anything
00:38:46 Very important to back off the pressure.
00:38:50 There's a deception here.
00:38:55 ...they're expecting to see a man
00:38:59 Well, you know, that may be true.
00:39:03 It might indeed be true.
00:39:06 But I think what you have--
00:39:08 -Oh, baby.
00:39:13 Can I--?
00:39:27 Loco man
00:39:29 Watching all the fish swim away
00:39:33 He no work
00:39:36 Sitting here on the sand
00:39:39 Talking about the loco man.
00:39:41 Sunny land
00:39:43 Coconut coming down all the time
00:39:47 Milk, she sweeter than honey wine
00:39:50 Sitting here on the sand
00:39:56 Sun breaks over the sprits'l yard
00:40:00 Jib sheets hauling to leeward hard
00:40:04 Crosstrees humming a morning hymn
00:40:07 -I'm the cabin boy, call me Jim
00:40:11 Fare away, fare away
00:40:13 To the furbelow of the wily whale
00:40:17 Hold on. One second, please.
00:40:21 Are you familiar with a book about
00:40:25 He was chasing some big whale.
00:40:27 He had a catch phrase he'd always
00:40:30 If you could do that, we'd have someone
00:40:34 And you could Look at the camera
00:40:38 And every time,
00:40:41 And by the end you're all soaked,
00:40:47 At the end of the song you turn the
00:40:51 Kerplunk!
00:40:53 It's just a thought.
00:40:55 Oh, when the veil of dreams has lifted
00:41:00 And the fairy tales have all been told
00:41:05 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
00:41:11 More precious than a pot of gold
00:41:17 My sweet, my dear, my darling
00:41:21 You're so far away from me
00:41:27 Though an ocean of tears divides us
00:41:32 Let the bridge of our love span the sea
00:41:43 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
00:41:55 More precious than a pot of gold
00:42:15 We're pleased to have
00:42:18 It's not something we usually do.
00:42:22 But it'll be a Lot of fun.
00:42:24 It's Like having a carnival
00:42:27 I'm the events liaison.
00:42:31 People here call me "King Larry"
00:42:33 ...because I do everything
00:42:36 I've been up into the highest catwalk
00:42:39 I've been in the basement
00:42:42 I'm also a singer.
00:42:44 I'm not a professional,
00:42:47 ...and, you know,
00:42:51 But this....
00:42:53 This is the best place to sing in
00:42:57 The acoustics are just perfect.
00:43:23 -Did I miss it?
00:43:26 -I'm not sure if I'm going north or south.
00:43:30 The guy said Midtown.
00:43:33 -It has chrome on the front of the hotel.
00:43:36 -I'm gonna make a Left.
00:43:38 -Do you have a map?
00:43:44 Were you planning to study it later
00:43:47 -Is it on the way?
00:43:51 Nobody's busting your chops. Yet.
00:43:53 -It's just a question of time.
00:43:56 I don't want you to.
00:43:59 We're excited to be involved
00:44:01 It will be a challenge for me
00:44:07 -Me too!
00:44:09 But that doesn't matter
00:44:12 ...which is what we do.
00:44:15 It matters what you think. And it
00:44:19 What we can sell to you.
00:44:21 And a product you'll Love to buy.
00:44:26 And if we can't do that, we fake it.
00:44:28 That's also part of public relations.
00:44:30 We're professionals here, you see.
00:44:34 We work together very well.
00:44:37 It's almost as Like we have one brain...
00:44:41 ...that we share between us.
00:44:43 It's Like I'LL have an idea, it will
00:44:48 ...and then it will get to Wally
00:44:54 I don't know about you,
00:44:58 ...amazing things
00:45:02 Like big, Like, not just big,
00:45:07 Ladies and gentlemen, as deputy mayor,
00:45:11 ...than to officially declare tomorrow...
00:45:14 ...Saturday, June 22...
00:45:16 ...Folk Music Day in the Big Apple.
00:45:19 Thank you.
00:45:26 Thank you very much, Your Honor,
00:45:29 I have two questions.
00:45:33 ...a rebirth of some of the finest
00:45:37 Yes, I think so!
00:45:40 And my second question is, where's
00:45:44 Someone shot the mayor,
00:45:47 The DA's office called. They can't find
00:45:51 Let me say a few words
00:45:54 One of the founding members has passed
00:45:59 George Menschell! Come on up here
00:46:03 How are you? You wanna say something?
00:46:07 Thank you sincerely, Your Honor...
00:46:09 ...which reminds me, I was at
00:46:13 "I'd Like to meet your wife."
00:46:16 To paraphrase an old joke:
00:46:19 It's The New Main Street Singers!
00:46:27 -Thank you. You can take this.
00:46:29 -Thank you very much.
00:46:34 Don't forget to buy the CDs.
00:46:35 Seeing these long lines of fans...
00:46:38 ...who want nothing more than
00:46:42 ...it's Like it's 1968...
00:46:44 ...or '67, or '66.
00:46:49 The good years.
00:46:51 It's so wonderful to see the people...
00:46:54 ...that have enjoyed your music
00:46:57 And there's so many of them.
00:46:58 And they just want to shake your hand
00:47:03 "We dig what you do."
00:47:06 And then there's the kids.
00:47:09 "You rock me."
00:47:13 I was flashing back to the rush
00:47:18 ...arriving at the concert hall...
00:47:20 ...having stagehands saying,
00:47:25 "Good luck, Mickey, tonight."
00:47:27 And we'd wait backstage,
00:47:32 "Mickey, Mickey, Mitch, Mitch!"
00:47:36 Walking out into the spot...
00:47:39 ...the sound of the crowd cheering...
00:47:43 ...the decibel Level.
00:47:49 For me it was just watching you.
00:47:52 Because I couldn't think about me
00:47:56 I Look forward to that, Mitch.
00:47:59 -I wonder if it'll happen tomorrow night.
00:48:02 -And I'LL be there.
00:48:04 I'LL be there in the best seat in the house.
00:48:14 I guess you can make money
00:48:18 -Yeah, I guess you can.
00:48:20 It's usually because of acts
00:48:26 That commercial crapola.
00:48:31 I'm a model train enthusiast.
00:48:34 Oh, that's great!
00:48:38 I've got a whole layout in my basement.
00:48:44 Yeah, thank God for model trains.
00:48:47 -Absolutely.
00:48:49 ...they wouldn't have
00:48:55 Excuse me. Hi.
00:48:57 Hi, everybody. Just be a second.
00:49:00 Don't want to interrupt.
00:49:03 I'd Like to propose a big, big toast...
00:49:07 ...in honor of Dad.
00:49:10 He was an amazing
00:49:13 ...a fantastic person in general.
00:49:16 And I think anybody who even knew Dad
00:49:19 ...knew that he had an amazing hum.
00:49:22 And wherever he went,
00:49:27 And anybody who heard this hum
00:49:31 And in honor of Dad,
00:49:34 ...Let's raise our glasses
00:49:56 Okay, bring it down. Back up.
00:49:59 Okay, bring it across. Bring it across.
00:50:02 -Right on down here.
00:50:07 -So, what do you got? You got vocal?
00:50:10 -Some of them are already in there.
00:50:14 Yeah. We do this every single day.
00:50:18 -Those are microphones?
00:50:21 -They don't have tops on them.
00:50:24 They'll have tops when we're done,
00:50:28 Mike heads.
00:50:29 Would you call them a "mike head,"
00:50:33 It's called a microphone,
00:50:36 -We really want them.
00:50:56 Town hall. Tonight.
00:51:01 Two weeks rehearsal.
00:51:05 Crazy. New phrasing. Different keys.
00:51:10 But couldn't have happened
00:51:13 If we'd stayed together,
00:51:16 We'd be lucky to be in Branson,
00:51:20 Nope.
00:51:22 This was our crazy way of getting here.
00:51:27 Well, I'm feeling very relaxed.
00:51:30 Very confident. Very focused.
00:51:34 You know, 35 years ago,
00:51:38 ...meant playing "find the cobra"
00:51:43 But tonight, I feel good.
00:51:48 I feel ready for whatever
00:51:51 ...that we will take with us
00:51:55 I'm sure it will be an adventure...
00:51:59 ...a voyage on this magnificent vessel...
00:52:02 ...into uncharted waters.
00:52:05 What if we see sailfish jumping...
00:52:09 ...and flying across the magnificent orb
00:52:15 I think it's impeccable.
00:52:17 It says happiness, it says opening night.
00:52:20 It says, "I Love folk music but I'm not
00:52:24 I'm a Little afraid of these
00:52:28 -Apple blossoms.
00:52:31 They're at eye height. Someone
00:52:36 ...and poke an eye out.
00:52:39 If we could get a shape to them,
00:52:43 I have a health and safety issue.
00:52:46 They're a disaster.
00:52:49 They're just waiting for
00:52:52 ...or somebody in a walker,
00:52:56 A Lot of my family
00:52:59 I've got an idea. Let's get carnations
00:53:04 I don't see how that would work.
00:53:07 I've adopted the practice...
00:53:10 ...of taking care of my skin.
00:53:13 It's something, you know,
00:53:17 I think Jerry was razzing me
00:53:23 He caught me in the bathroom...
00:53:25 ...and I did that thing where
00:53:28 ...and he said, "What are you
00:53:32 ...Norwegian fishermen have used
00:53:36 And with that regimen,
00:53:39 ...I know that when I walk out
00:53:43 ...will Look its best in front
00:53:46 That will give me the confidence
00:53:51 ...and sing my best and be my best...
00:53:54 ...and you can't put a price on that.
00:53:58 -Tammy, we all set on the pre-record?
00:54:01 You know, I produced
00:54:04 Before I came to PBN
00:54:07 People wanted more close-ups. I want
00:54:13 We have plenty of close-ups scheduled.
00:54:15 Another great thing would be one
00:54:19 ...to see the enormity
00:54:23 Would be a crane.
00:54:26 -No, we don't have a crane.
00:54:29 You know those swooping shots
00:54:32 ...and hammers in on a shot
00:54:36 -That would be great.
00:54:37 Or when they pull back, kind of
00:54:41 ...where you see the whole thing,
00:54:44 It would be.
00:54:47 I could make some calls, if we could
00:54:52 -ALL right, here's your giant banjo.
00:54:56 It doesn't Look flat
00:54:58 It has basically no dimension to it.
00:55:01 It's painted to Look three-dimensional.
00:55:05 But it's not painted on the back.
00:55:09 From the audience it will Look fine.
00:55:13 Go out there and take a peek.
00:55:15 Is this the real furniture
00:55:18 It's not called "furniture."
00:55:20 It's painted this way. It Looks completely
00:55:25 So this is the real furniture,
00:55:28 -Is this an actual street lamp?
00:55:32 Can you have an actual
00:55:36 ...that represents the thing
00:55:38 -...something that it's pretending to be?
00:55:43 I have no time to explain Stagecraft 101 .
00:55:47 -Everything is exactly the way you--
00:55:51 Those are Lights,
00:55:54 -But they Look shaky.
00:55:57 Is that wire? I see a wire.
00:56:09 Fellas, thanks a Lot for coming
00:56:14 Honestly, that's so beautiful.
00:56:16 And thank you for the flowers,
00:56:19 Did you Like that?
00:56:21 We had to get rid of the lavender
00:56:24 -Sorry about that.
00:56:27 I remember you guys staying
00:56:29 I remember you were always trying
00:56:34 You were, Like, 15 years old
00:56:39 -Penny stakes.
00:56:41 You always teased me with those
00:56:45 Yeah, we didn't know you were gonna
00:57:01 Mitch.
00:57:03 You okay?
00:57:05 Yes.
00:57:24 This flame, Like all flames,
00:57:28 It also represents
00:57:33 It also represents a penis.
00:57:37 Red, orange, yellow, green, blue
00:57:41 Indigo, violet
00:57:47 -Ten seconds to air.
00:57:51 Seven...
00:57:53 ...six, five, four...
00:57:56 ...three, two....
00:57:58 Roll A. Fade up on A.
00:58:05 PBN New York is proud to present:
00:58:08 Live from Town Hall,
00:58:12 ...an evening of folk music.
00:58:15 Featuring The New Main Street Singers...

00:58:22 And now your host,
00:58:37 Hello, I'm Jonathan Steinbloom,
00:58:40 ...I would Like to make
00:58:43 I'd Like to warn you that some of the
00:58:48 ...have dangerously Low-hanging vines...
00:58:50 ...and may be poisonous,
00:58:53 And don't become entangled in them
00:59:04 On behalf of the entire
00:59:07 ...welcome to Ode to Irving.
00:59:12 Thank you. Thank you.
00:59:16 Please join all of us and give a really
00:59:20 ...about whom Dad used to say...
00:59:22 ...they were the kind of infectious
00:59:26 Ladies and gentlemen,
00:59:49 Thank you, New York City,
00:59:52 Gee, I got a question.
00:59:58 Never did no wandering
01:00:02 Never did no wandering
01:00:06 Never did no wandering after all
01:00:14 Never did no wandering
01:00:27 My mother was the cold north wind
01:00:30 My daddy was the son of a railroad man
01:00:34 From west of hell
01:00:40 Never heard the whistle
01:00:44 Or the singing of its driving wheel
01:00:47 Oh, I never did no wandering
01:00:49 I didn't say a word.
01:00:51 I don't know.
01:00:54 Never did no wandering after all
01:01:00 They say the highway's just one big road
01:01:03 And it goes from here to there
01:01:08 You swear to God you didn't talk
01:01:12 You didn't tell him
01:01:14 I saw you talking to Terry Bohner.
01:01:18 I said, "Isn't it warm?"
01:01:20 Well, it's getting warmer now.
01:01:24 I don't think finger-pointing
01:01:29 -I think it's clear what we do.
01:01:31 -I'm gonna suggest we be bold.
01:01:35 We open with "Wandering."
01:01:38 Did you miss the Last couple of minutes?
01:01:42 -Turn it back up.
01:01:45 We say you can enjoy a toothpaste
01:01:51 They've brushed their teeth
01:01:54 You can't have, especially on a folk bill,
01:01:59 That doesn't work.
01:02:03 Never did no wandering after all
01:02:08 Easy now!
01:02:09 Never did no wandering
01:02:12 Never did no wandering
01:02:15 Never did no wandering after all
01:02:21 No, I never did no wandering
01:02:25 After all
01:02:40 Oh, boy. Thank you very much!
01:02:44 That song is so fun to sing.
01:02:47 Before we go a little bit further,
01:02:52 Hi there, I'm Terry Bohner.
01:02:59 I'm going out for some air.
01:03:01 Are you sure you're okay?
01:03:03 Yes.
01:03:30 One night Mama went to fetch
01:03:32 Fell down the cellar stairs
01:03:34 Stork dropped in
01:03:37 So my sister was born down there
01:03:39 Daddy said this one will be nothing but a
01:03:43 But Mama just loved her
01:03:46 With a face like a parboiled yam
01:03:48 Come on, boys
01:03:50 I know you don't want to hear this,
01:03:55 ...we open with "Old Joe's Place."
01:03:57 We go out, do the song we're
01:04:01 And then, hey, here's the icing
01:04:04 -What's the icing?
01:04:06 -That's the cake.
01:04:09 Mom and Daddy put together
01:04:12 Counting me and Jack and Cousin Will
01:04:14 We all hopped into the old Chevy pickup
01:04:18 Daddy took his Remington
01:04:20 For to set his little darling free
01:04:23 Daddy, shut the goldarn door
01:04:27 Let's go, boys
01:04:30 Guess we better leave her there
01:04:32 Let's go, boys
01:04:34 Mama says it's more than fair
01:04:59 Ladies and gentlemen,
01:05:05 I have been watching and observing
01:05:12 Boy, that's fun! That's really fun, man.
01:05:15 -We weren't really listening.
01:05:19 I couldn't hear so well, but, shoot,
01:05:26 And now, please join me in welcoming
01:05:29 Taken alone they are merely
01:05:32 ...Alan's Barrows and Mark Shubb.
01:05:35 But when you put them all together...
01:05:37 ...they spell "absolutely fantastic."
01:05:41 Ladies and gentlemen, The Folksmen!
01:05:52 Thank you. Yeah, it's really us.
01:05:56 -Wow.
01:05:58 Long time no see.
01:06:00 Can't tell you.
01:06:02 Great to be back.
01:06:07 You might remember it,
01:06:16 Whenever I'm out wandering
01:06:21 I often stop and think
01:06:25 Where friendly folks can gather
01:06:32 -Hey.
01:06:35 -You guys were great.
01:06:38 -Have you seen Mitch?
01:06:39 Okay.
01:06:47 Mitch?
01:06:52 Pick it!
01:06:56 That's nice.
01:07:01 Well, there's a puppy in the parlor
01:07:05 And a smelly old blanket
01:07:08 There's popcorn in the popper
01:07:10 There's pie in the pantry
01:07:42 Just look for the busted neon sign
01:07:46 Ea-a-oe's
01:07:50 Well, there's a puppy in the parlor
01:07:54 And a smelly old blanket
01:07:56 There's popcorn in the popper
01:07:58 There's pie in the pantry
01:08:00 There's sausage in the morning
01:08:02 There's a nurse on duty
01:08:04 There's chicken on the table
01:08:08 There's always something cooking
01:08:19 Thank you!
01:08:21 -Thank you so much!
01:08:24 Thank you very much.
01:08:28 What a great crowd.
01:08:31 ...in a Little audience participation.
01:08:34 We're not gonna be
01:08:38 First time through, relax.
01:08:41 We'll start off with
01:08:57 What?
01:08:58 Every morning at 5:00
01:09:03 Washes up, he ties his shoes
01:09:07 So far, so good.
01:09:09 -Ready, two.
01:09:12 -Ready, three, wide.
01:09:15 Oh, my God. Mitch is gone.
01:09:18 Mitch is gone. Oh, my God.
01:09:21 Without Mitch, we got gornisht.
01:09:24 Well, we're gonna go find him.
01:09:29 We'll need some chickens.
01:09:32 How about this aisle?
01:09:34 Just beyond the man with the big shirt.
01:09:37 I want you to be my chickens.
01:09:41 Pretty good. That's the ticket.
01:09:43 Now we want to hear from
01:09:46 Not people with a sore throat,
01:09:53 We're gonna put a saddle
01:09:57 Does he have a cell phone or a pager?
01:10:00 -He's wandering. He likes to wander.
01:10:04 -He got a Little nervous.
01:10:07 I'm sure it's fine. Let's calm down.
01:10:10 -Is there a cockfight arena near here?
01:10:14 At least he's not lying on the ground
01:10:17 -Why didn't someone go out with him?
01:10:20 -Can she do these songs solo?
01:10:22 And the chickens cluck
01:10:25 The horses neigh
01:10:28 Crickets go fiddle-dee-dee
01:10:31 -Yes, they do.
01:10:35 The pigs oink, oink
01:10:38 It's a barnyard symphony
01:10:43 -Thank you so much.
01:10:45 -Give yourselves a big hand.
01:10:49 Thank you very, very much for coming.
01:10:51 Thank you, Irv. Thanks for the good seats.
01:10:54 We are The Folksmen. We hope
01:10:59 Thank you. Good night.
01:11:02 We gotta give them more.
01:11:08 Thank you for having us back.
01:11:11 We have a song we'd Like to do
01:11:16 We don't often do encores,
01:11:21 It has to do with a time
01:11:24 ...when this time of year rolls around.
01:11:30 The Spanish Civil War.
01:11:32 But our group historian, Mr. Mark Shubb,
01:11:37 Thank you very much, Alan's.
01:11:39 In the Late 1930s of the Last century,
01:11:44 What are you doing? Mitch could be
01:11:48 -Would you consider doing both parts?
01:11:51 ...bake a nice tray of Nanaimo bars,
01:11:55 That's what I Like doing!
01:11:57 Mitch, where the hell were you?
01:11:59 -Are we on?
01:12:01 It's too Late. I forgot what a selfish--
01:12:04 It just took me a while
01:12:10 -That is nice.
01:12:17 In the Late summer, early fall of 1938...
01:12:21 ...so the story goes
01:12:24 ...in the green hills
01:12:29 -Good night, everybody!
01:12:46 They're called The Folksmen,
01:12:49 ...I think we're all going to have to
01:12:53 ...because they sing beautifully
01:12:58 And now, Ladies and gentlemen,
01:13:02 Mitch and Mickey.
01:13:12 We Love you!
01:13:26 Thank you.
01:13:28 Thank you so much
01:13:32 It does not seem Like just yesterday
01:13:35 ...and started making music together.
01:13:38 I don't know if any of you know
01:13:42 ...that Mitch and I met in the hospital.
01:13:45 Mitch was there
01:13:49 ...after defending the honor
01:13:54 Me.
01:13:56 And I, of course, was there to visit.
01:14:00 And the only way that Mitch could
01:14:05 Every word of it poetry.
01:14:08 ...I have the very first poem...
01:14:11 ...that you wrote me.
01:14:16 Parched in exile
01:14:20 Though silenced behind
01:14:23 Your spirit burns through
01:14:26 In your cool, misty loveliness
01:14:34 I just wanted a drink of water.
01:14:51 Oh, when the veil of dreams has lifted
01:14:57 And the fairy tales have all been told
01:15:03 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
01:15:08 I know this song.
01:15:12 With the kiss.
01:15:18 -Remember?
01:15:20 Yeah.
01:15:24 Wonder how they're gonna handle that.
01:15:31 -Five dollars says they do it.
01:15:38 And when the veil of dreams has lifted
01:15:44 And the fairy tales have all been told
01:15:50 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
01:15:56 More precious than a pot of gold
01:16:02 My sweet, my dear, my darling
01:16:08 You're so far away from me
01:16:14 Though an ocean of tears divides us
01:16:19 -Let the bridge of our love span the sea
01:16:46 Your kiss
01:16:48 There's a kiss at the end of the rainbow
01:17:14 More precious than a pot of
01:17:21 Gold
01:17:32 Thank you.
01:17:35 Thank you so much.
01:17:38 Are you okay?
01:17:42 Excuse me, sir. Sorry. Sorry.
01:17:45 Hi, everybody!
01:17:49 -Good to be back!
01:17:53 Thank you again.
01:17:55 We're back!
01:17:58 -"Mighty Wind."
01:18:01 One in C. Here we go.
01:18:05 One, two, three.
01:18:07 As I traveled down the back roads
01:18:12 Every carpenter and cowboy
01:18:17 They're all talking about a feeling
01:18:22 They're all talking about this mighty wind
01:18:27 Oh, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:18:32 It's blowing out a message
01:18:38 Yes, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:18:43 It's blowing peace and freedom
01:18:48 From a lighthouse in Bar Harbor
01:18:53 From a trawler down in Shreveport
01:18:57 There's a star on the horizon
01:19:04 It's lighting up this mighty wind
01:19:08 Oh, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:19:13 It's blowing out a message
01:19:18 Yes, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:19:24 It's blowing peace and freedom
01:19:29 When the blind man sees the picture
01:19:34 When the fisherman stops fishing
01:19:39 We'll still hear the wondrous story
01:19:45 The story of this mighty wind
01:19:49 Oh, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:19:54 It's blowing out a message
01:20:00 Yes, a mighty wind's a-blowing
01:20:05 It's blowing peace and freedom
01:20:09 Yes, it's blowing peace and freedom
01:20:33 So the morning after the big show
01:20:35 ...the TV network executives
01:20:38 ...trying to get The New Main Street Singers
01:20:43 We took some very nice meetings.
01:20:47 They Loved my idea
01:20:51 You know, in diapers. And...
01:20:55 ...it always makes me laugh
01:21:00 The network execs said, "Look, we're not
01:21:04 We Love the kids,
01:21:07 And the word "judgment,"
01:21:10 I always thought there were
01:21:13 ...but now it seems there are only nine.
01:21:18 But there's also nine
01:21:21 And I thought, "What if they were
01:21:26 And it was my idea to call them "The
01:21:31 And here's the idea. During the day...
01:21:34 ...they're handling some of the top,
01:21:39 There's a Lot of tension there. And at night,
01:21:44 ...they Live in one big house and they
01:21:49 Now, maybe during the day they hear
01:21:53 ...they argue about who cooks dinner
01:21:57 ...the laundry or, "Say, why don't
01:22:01 "And that's sexual harassment!
01:22:03 That was decided in case 126,
01:22:08 Oh, I Like that.
01:22:12 I'm not doing much writing,
01:22:20 Won't make your patients cringe
01:22:24 Sure-Flo, Sure-Flo
01:22:29 Don't leave them cold and damp
01:22:33 Use our buttocks drapes and penis clamp
01:22:39 I'm a musician again.
01:22:42 Being on-stage again with Mitch
01:22:48 Oh, boy. I never thought it was possible.
01:22:50 And there we were.
01:22:54 Just wish he didn't
01:22:58 You know. That damn kiss.
01:23:00 My sister-- Well, they were all at the show,
01:23:05 "You led him on. You shouldn't have kissed
01:23:11 It was just a kiss. And it's part of--
01:23:15 And I forgot what that feels Like...
01:23:17 ...where you get caught up
01:23:21 ...and you want to give them...
01:23:25 ...anything they want.
01:23:28 I think Mitch....
01:23:30 I didn't lead him on. But he...
01:23:33 ...took it the wrong way, I think.
01:23:37 I've never been in better head space.
01:23:41 I'm writing poetry again.
01:23:45 I'm going through a very prolific phase.
01:23:52 Ideas are coming faster
01:23:58 My one fear in getting together
01:24:03 ...always that it might rekindle...
01:24:09 ...feelings that she used to have for me.
01:24:13 I feel badly that she was misled...
01:24:18 ...by the theatrics of the moment.
01:24:24 But I think it was a wonderful time
01:24:30 I know that I will always think
01:24:35 ...every time I see a rose.
01:24:43 We've got some gigs here working
01:24:46 It has been a time of changes,
01:24:52 It was Like a great big door
01:24:57 After that concert I realized...
01:25:01 ...I wanna spend as much
01:25:04 -...playing folk music with these gentlemen.
01:25:08 And I wanna spend all of it as a woman.
01:25:11 I came to a realization that I was, and am...
01:25:15 ...a blond, female folk singer...
01:25:19 ...trapped in the body of a bald,
01:25:22 ...and I had to Let me out or I would die.
01:25:28 When you put it that way,
01:25:31 Almost.
01:25:32 Now they don't allow no frowns inside
01:25:36 -There's apple brandy by the keg
01:25:41 So if you've got a hankering
01:25:46 Just look for the busted neon sign
01:25:49 Ea-a-oe's
